Home and contents insurance
Coastal homes, holiday homes and everything in them.
House, contents, landlord and holiday home cover for the Coromandel and anywhere in New Zealand, placed with the insurer that actually fits your property, from a one bedroom apartment to a high value home on the water. We shop the market, explain the decisions that are yours to make, and run your claim when something goes wrong.
What we arrange
House
Rebuild cover for the house, garage, sheds, decks, pools, fences and retaining walls, with the natural disaster cover that sits alongside it. We check the sum insured with you every year, because a figure set in 2020 is rarely enough to rebuild in 2026.
Contents
Everything inside, and most of it when it leaves the house too. Specified items for jewellery, art, bikes and gear worth more than the standard limits, so a claim pays what the thing is actually worth.
Holiday homes and baches
Policies written for a house that is empty for weeks at a time, or let out over summer. Standard house policies restrict both; the ones we use for holiday homes don't, and we tell you what they expect of you.
Landlord
The building, loss of rent after a claim, damage by tenants and your liability as a landlord. For long term rentals and for baches let through Airbnb or Bookabach.
Lifestyle blocks
A house on a few hectares with a shed, a tractor and some stock sits between a house policy and a farm policy. We place it with the rural insurers who write exactly that, so the shed and the tractor are covered too.
High value homes
For homes with rebuild values and contents beyond the mainstream insurers' appetite, we use Steadfast's specialist markets, with agreed value, worldwide contents and the service that goes with it.
Insuring on the Coromandel
The Peninsula is a wonderful place to own a home and a tricky one to insure. Many of our clients' houses sit on the coast, on steep bush sections or in small settlements a long drive from a builder. Insurers see erosion, storm surge, flooding and the cost of rebuilding somewhere remote, and the direct insurers increasingly answer with a flat no or a premium that makes no sense.
We see the same risks, but we know which insurers understand them. As a Steadfast Group member we put your home to NZI, Vero, Ando, QBE, Chubb and others at the same time and compare the answers. Where an insurer's terms are tight, we explain exactly what is and isn't covered, in plain English, before you decide. Our clients run from Dargaville to Queenstown, so the same applies wherever in New Zealand your house is.
How a quote works
Tell us about the property and what matters to you, on the quote form or in a call. We ask the questions that change your premium and your cover: how the house is built, what it would cost to rebuild, how it is used, what the contents are worth. We take it to the insurers that fit and come back within one business day with options and a plain English summary of what the cover does, what it costs, and the two or three decisions that are actually yours to make. Nothing is bound until you've talked with a broker and agreed.
Questions people ask about home insurance
Do you insure holiday homes and baches?
Yes, and a lot of them. A holiday home needs a policy that allows for it being empty for long stretches and, often, for short-term letting. Standard house policies restrict or exclude both. We place holiday homes with insurers whose wordings allow for how the property is actually used, and we tell you what the policy expects of you, such as turning the water off when you leave.
My house is near the beach. Can you get it insured?
Almost always. Coastal homes on the Coromandel face erosion, storm surge and flooding questions that direct insurers increasingly answer with a no. Through Steadfast we put your home to several insurers at once, and the ones that know the Peninsula will usually quote. Where terms are tight we explain exactly what is and isn't covered so there are no surprises at claim time.
What should my house be insured for?
The sum insured is the most a policy will pay to rebuild your house, including demolition, professional fees and the extra cost of building on a difficult site. Building costs on the Coromandel have risen sharply since 2020, so a figure set a few years ago is often well short. We check it with you at every renewal and can help you use a rebuild cost calculator or arrange a valuation.
Why is my premium going up when I haven't claimed?
Part of your bill isn't premium at all: the Natural Hazards Commission levy and the Fire and Emergency levy are set by government and have risen several times. The rest reflects the insurer's view of your location and the cost of rebuilding. We shop every renewal, so if another insurer prices your home more sensibly, you'll hear about it from us.
What does contents insurance cover away from home?
Most policies we use cover your contents anywhere in New Zealand, and often overseas for a limited period, so the laptop in the car and the bike on the rack are included. Specified items such as jewellery, art or e-bikes may need to be listed to be covered for their full value. We go through this with you so nothing valuable is sitting uninsured.
Do I need landlord insurance for a rental?
Yes, if you let a property, even to family. A landlord policy covers the building plus the things a house policy doesn't: loss of rent after an insured event, damage caused by tenants, and the liability that comes with being a landlord. If you rent out a bach for part of the year, tell us; some policies treat that as a letting risk and some don't.
